Meet our Music Staff

 PHIL HARMELINK, ORGANIST
Dr. Philip Harmelink has been the organist at St. Matthew’s since 1979 and prior to that time, he was a part-time organist and substitute organist for 10 years at various Protestant churches.  He studied piano for 10 years from age 7-17 followed by 4 years of organ at Hope College (Michigan) and he later studied organ at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music while an accounting faculty member at the University of Cincinnati from 1976 to 1979.   Since 1979, he has been on the faculty at the University of New Orleans where he is the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting and Chair of the Department of Accounting.  While at St. Matthew’s, Dr. Harmelink has played over 1,000 preludes, voluntaries, offertories, and postludes, which have included classical organ works and chorale preludes as well as hymn variations and other organ pieces by more contemporary composers.

Maggie Probst, Music Director

Maggie is a Louisiana native, raised on the Northshore (mostly), and is the oldest of four girls. She began taking piano lessons at the age of 8 and has barely gone a day since without touching the keys. Singing in her high school chorus and church youth choir gave her a passion for vocal music that she has never lost. Maggie graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Music in both Piano and Voice in 2009.  She now teaches piano and voice lessons to about 25 students and sings with the New Orleans Opera Chorus. Besides playing music, Maggie spends her time cooking, making jewelry, and hanging out with family and friends. She is already enjoying working with the people at St. Matthew’s and is excited about what is to come.
